We are delighted to share the excellent results achieved by our Class of 2018 in this summer’s GCSE exams. It was a great day and a great end to a year of achievement at Oak Wood School. We have been on a transformational journey since converting to co-ed, admitting girls for the first time in Year 7, last September and opening our doors to a brand-new state-of-the-art building last January.
Our Year 11 boys achieved notable results, namely 60% achieving 4-9 in core subjects of English and Maths, an increase of 7 percentage points on last year, and a 44.1 Attainment 8 score that far exceeds the national average for boys.
|Progress 8 (provisional figure)||+0.03|
|Basics (4+ in E and M)||62%|
|Basics (5+ in E and M)||44%|
|Students entered for the EBacc||48%|
Despite the national changes in GCSEs that took place last year, the percentage of students achieving top grades across a range of subjects remains impressive. The new GCSEs have more demanding content, mainly assessed by exams, and a new grading scale of 9 (high) to 1 (low). This is the second year this new grading system has been utilised for the core subjects which has now been extended to include 20 subjects.
Ben Jane, Assistant Headteacher (Key Stage 4), highlighted: “These fantastic results reflect what can be achieved at Oak Wood. Staff and students have worked collaboratively to make sure everyone has the chance to fulfil their potential, and I am delighted that their hard work has paid off.”
We now look forward to welcoming many of our students back to Oak Wood in September to continue their studies within our thriving Sixth Form.
|Oak Wood Sixth Form||38%|
|Other Sixth Form||28%|
|Leaving the UK||2%|
Mark Bland, Headteacher commented: “Our focus on a broad education and a refusal to restrict student choice is completely evident. Students did not give up on their sporting, musical or dramatic endeavours nor did they evade their leadership roles and other responsibilities. Oak Wood students have shown that academic excellence and the development of character and life skills can go hand in hand. I am extremely proud of the work of our dedicated teaching team, our supportive parents and most of all our aspirational and enthusiastic students.”
Individual success stories:
We are incredibly proud of all of our students, but some individuals have achieved outstanding performances that warrant particular mention:

The former Charville Primary School pupil believes the support of Oak Wood staff, by providing booster sessions and help on how to prepare for exams mentally, has helped him to achieve his goals. Tom highly recommends Oak Wood because of its great sense of community; he is looking forward to continuing his studies at Oak Wood Sixth Form.
“I have enjoyed the extra-curricular opportunities the school has to offer such as The Brilliant Club; it was a great insight into, and preparation for, university life, completing a lecture based project on the development of medicine; I was proud to have attained a 2:1 certificate. My advice to younger students would be to not take your school years for granted.”
Josh, former Pinkwell Primary School pupil, was ecstatic with his results which included a 9 in Maths and Physics and an A in Film Studies. Josh enjoyed the range of school trips, particularly the outdoor excursions, where students developed teamwork, problem solving and leadership skills.
“Every single teacher is dedicated to helping students, and do their best to prepare everyone for their exams. My advice to younger students would be to stay focused, work hard and start revising early!”
Former Charville Primary School pupil, Hakim, was celebrating exceptional grades today, having achieved an outstanding 9 in Maths, 8 in Chemistry and Physics, 7 in Biology, 6 in French and English and 5 in History. Former Oak Farm Primary School pupil Karthik achieved an incredible set of GCSEs: 7 in Maths, Biology and Chemistry, 6 in Physics, English Language and History, and a B in Business Studies. He attributes his success to the supportive staff, excellent facilities and resources, online out of school learning and extra tuition sessions.

My advice to younger students would be that it’s never too early to start putting in the work and committing to your studies. Use the teachers, they are dedicated and brilliant”.

2018 A Level Results
Our students have worked incredibly hard this year and the results they have achieved this summer are well deserved. We wish them all the luck with university placements in September.
Outstanding achiever Shillan, achieved a remarkable A* in Maths and Further Maths and B in Physics. On receiving his results, he said: “The teachers at the Sixth Form, particularly my Maths teacher, were willing to invest their time to provide extra help; they were excellent this year in helping me achieve a place at university.” Shillan now looks forward to studying at the University of Warwick to study MORSE which will open many prosperous career paths for him.

Cameron commented: “The personalised learning and additional opportunities such as Brilliant Club, careers talks and work experience has helped me to reach my full potential.”
Mark Bland, Headteacher said: “Our students’ achievements are richly deserved because of their relentless determination to succeed. I’d also like to publicly praise our excellent staff, whose unstinting support has created an unparalleled team ethos than runs throughout our blossoming Sixth Form.”
I am delighted that students are undertaking such a breadth of opportunities, in no small part thanks to our ability to offer such a wide spread of subjects and enrichment opportunities. They leave us today not just as well qualified young adults but equipped with the outstanding interpersonal skills and can-do attitudes that will serve them well through their university studies and into the world of work.
At Oak Wood Sixth Form, we take the time to ensure we understand each of our students as an individual. Our transition programme, coupled with excellent pastoral care, allows us to build relationships with all our students, and our ongoing review process will make sure that they fulfil their potential in the subjects that are right for them.
We look forward to seeing our former Year 11 students on GCSE results day next week and welcoming them to our sixth form in September for a full induction programme.
